About the Shant (above):

In 1871 the idea of building a hall or lodge was presented and in 1873 The Omicron Literary Association was formed to hold the property. A lot  was purchased in 1875. Architect William LeBaron Jenney was hired to design the building. Jenney taught the first course of architecture at the University of Michigan and was later recognized as the “father” of the skyscraper. In 1878 the cornerstone was laid and, at Commencement in 1879 Omicron dedicated the “Shant.”

The building has been described as Gothic-Victorian, eclectic Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance. In 1901 the exterior eight-foot brick wall was added which adds to its mysterious appearance.

The Shant was substantially renovated in 1971. In 1986, a campaign  raised enough  for the Rampant Lion Foundation to purchase the building as an historical asset of

 Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Join brothers from around North America August 10 - 12

in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for the

Sixth Annual DKE Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Rampant Lion Foundation, Delta Kappa Epsilon’s 501(c)(3) Educational Foundation, sponsors this annual event which this year commemorates the life of DKE's Honorary Chairman for 25 years, Brother Gerald R. Ford '35.

Proceeds from this tournament will fund a scholarship for the undergraduate Deke who most mirrors the gentleman, scholar and jolly good fellow attributes of Jerry Ford.  Additional proceeds will continue the restoration, upgrading and renovation of the 130-year-old Shant in Ann Arbor, home to the Gerald R. Ford Library of DKE.

DKE International and the Rampant Lion Foundation appreciate the tournament's current sponsors, without whom the event would not be possible; and the Fraternity seeks additional sponsorships for the golf outing which will take place Saturday, August 11.  The host committee has planned a weekend-long event that will begin Friday afternoon, August 10, with a special visit to, and presentation in, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor.

Friday evening, join the brotherhood at Lord Fox, an old Ann Arbor spot that was a favorite

of Henry Ford's when he was horseback riding in the countryside.  Old English decor, great service, great food.

For those wanting more, we will adjourn to the Firefly Club in Ann Arbor, which has Dixieland Jazz every Friday night.  And for those who prefer baseball to fireflies, a side trip to the Detroit Tigers' game versus Oakland is being considered.  The game begins at 7:05 p.m. Friday.

Have you been looking for an opportunity to bring your chapter alumni together

for a reunion?  This is it!

Alumni: Invite brothers from your era to join you in Ann Arbor and take advantage of the great Deke programming already planned.

On Saturday, breakfast will be followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.

During the tournament, non-golfers will have several options depending upon their interests.  Of course, a golf course is a great place to be when it's filled with brothers, good drink and good cigars, regardless of whether you swing a club.

But the greater Ann Arbor area offers quite a lot for those who prefer to explore. We are working with the University of Michigan Athletic Department to arrange tours of athletic facilities and the University of Michigan Stadium.  We're also looking into a group tour at Historic Greenfield Village, a museum founded by Henry Ford.

So whether you're a golfer or non-golfer, plan to join us August 10 - 12.  Why?

Because in addition to the Friday and Saturday events, a cocktail reception for all alumni at the historic DKE Shant on the University of Michigan campus will follow the Tournament.  A fitting locale for the theme of this weekend, the reception will be hosted in the Shant's second floor Gerald R. Ford DKE library.

Another feature of the weekend will be the annual Lion Trophy awards banquet, which will conclude the day Saturday at the Campus Inn.

On Sunday, the DKE International Board of Directors will meet in open session, and all

alumni and actives are invited.

A variety of overnight accommodations are available, including reserved rooms at the University of Michigan's Campus Inn.  Discounted rooms will be made available for actives who wish to stay in the Omicron chapter house..

Sponsors are needed, and sponsorship gifts payable to the Rampant Lion Foundation are fully tax deductible. In addition to helping DKE, sponsors received promotional credit in the preview brochure that was sent to 25,000 Deke alumni earlier this month.  There also will be considerable recognition for the sponsors on the Web, both before and following the event.

A listing of sponsor categories and contribution form is here. Please complete the form and return it to the address included there. If you have questions, or want to discuss any of this with DKE International Executive Director David Easlick, please contact him at (800) 560-3353 or via cell phone at (202) 409-4306.

For a moving tribute to Brother Jerry, please visit www.dke.org.  The preview mailing in May will carry more details, but make your reservation now.  And encourage your brothers to do the same.  See you in August!
